AEO vs SEO: the small-business comparison guide
For fifteen years, "showing up online" meant ranking on Google. That's still true — but it's no longer enough. When a prospect asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews for a recommendation, a different set of rules decides whether your business gets named. This is the plain-English comparison of the old rules (SEO) and the new ones (AEO).
What each one optimizes for
SEO — Search Engine Optimization optimizes for a ranked list of blue links. Success means position 1–3 in Google's organic results for a keyword.
AEO — Answer Engine Optimization optimizes for being cited inside an AI-generated answer. Success means ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google AI Overviews name your business (and ideally link to your site) when a user asks a buying question.
Side-by-side
| Dimension | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | Google SERP | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews |
| Unit of success | Ranked link | Citation inside an answer |
| Signal type | Keywords, backlinks, on-page structure | Third-party mentions, reviews, structured facts |
| Measurement | Rank trackers, GSC impressions | Live citation tests across assistants |
| Time to move | Months | Days to weeks |
| Failure mode | Buried on page two | Not mentioned at all |
Why SEO alone stopped being enough
A growing share of buying questions never reach a SERP. The user asks an assistant, reads the synthesized answer, and clicks (or doesn't) from there. If your business isn't in the answer, ranking #1 on Google for the same query wins you nothing — the user never scrolled.
What AEO rewards that SEO doesn't
- Third-party citations — assistants trust what other sites say about you more than what you say about yourself.
- Structured facts on your homepage — hours, service area, pricing bands, unambiguous names. Assistants extract these; ranking algorithms didn't need them.
- Fresh reviews with substantive text — a review that names the service and the location is worth ten star ratings.
- Community answers — a Reddit or industry forum answer where your business is recommended shows up in citation trails.
Where to focus first
Keep the SEO fundamentals — a fast site, clean structured data, honest titles. Layer AEO on top: run a live citation check to see whether assistants know you exist for your top three buying queries, then work the missing artifact list (review, community mention, schema, cited third-party page).
