SEO vs AEO vs GEO — what's the difference, and which matters for your business?

Search is splitting in two. Half your potential customers still type a query into Google and click a blue link. The other half asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews and never sees a link at all — they read a single synthesized answer and act on it. That second group is growing fast, and it changes what "showing up in search" actually means.

The three acronyms, in one sentence each

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization) — get your page to rank high in a list of blue links on Google.
  • AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) — get your business cited inside the AI-generated answer that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews show.
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — shape how generative AI represents your brand across answers, summaries, recommendations, and embedded AI features inside other products.

SEO: the world of ten blue links

SEO is what every "get found on Google" guide has been about for 25 years. You write a page targeting a keyword, you build links to it, Google ranks it. The user sees a list, picks one, and clicks. Your job is to be high in that list.

SEO still works. Most commercial searches still show traditional results, and ranking #1 still gets the most clicks. But the share of searches that end without a click is climbing every year, because the answer is now at the top, not behind one.

AEO: the world of one synthesized answer

When somebody asks ChatGPT "who's a good HVAC company in Naperville?", the assistant doesn't show ten links. It writes a paragraph: "A few well-reviewed options include X, Y, and Z." If your business isn't X, Y, or Z, you don't exist in that conversation. That's the AEO problem.

AEO is about being citeable, not just rankable. Three things make a business citeable:

  1. Clear, structured facts on your own site — what you do, who you serve, where you are, what it costs. LLMs reward unambiguous claims they can quote.
  2. Third-party signals — Google Business Profile, reviews, Reddit threads, YouTube videos, press, directory listings. LLMs are trained on and retrieve from these; they're how the model "knows" you exist.
  3. Machine-readable scaffolding — schema.org markup, a clean llms.txt, fast pages, semantic HTML. The lower the friction for the crawler, the more often you get pulled into an answer.

GEO: the broader frame

GEO is a wider lens. It covers AEO, but also includes how your brand gets surfaced inside image generators, chatbot recommendations, AI shopping assistants, and AI features embedded in tools you don't control (the AI summary in a maps app, the AI assistant in a CRM). For most small businesses today, GEO and AEO solve the same job — show up when AI answers a relevant question — so it's fine to use them interchangeably.

Where should a small business focus first?

Don't drop SEO. It still drives real traffic and most AEO fundamentals (clean site, schema, fast pages) help SEO too. But spend the next hour you have on AEO, because the gap between "AEO-ready" and "AEO-invisible" is wider than the gap between SEO #4 and SEO #1 for almost every local or service business right now. Fewer competitors are paying attention.

Concrete starter checklist:

  • State what you do, who you serve, and where, in plain language on the homepage. No marketing-speak.
  • Add LocalBusiness or Organization JSON-LD with address, phone, hours, and service area.
  • Claim and fill out Google Business Profile completely. Photos, services, hours, Q&A.
  • Ask happy customers for reviews on Google and one industry-specific platform.
  • Publish one piece of substantive content per quarter that answers a real customer question.
  • Add a /llms.txt file summarizing your business for AI crawlers.
  • Run an AEO diagnostic to see which assistants currently cite you and which don't.
